Ordering the right quantity avoids both mid-work shortages and leftover stock. The calculation is simple once you know the wall area and the brick or block size including the mortar joint.
Step 1 — Find the wall area
Multiply wall length by height. Subtract the area of doors and windows. Example: a 4 m long × 3 m high wall with one 1 m × 2 m door = 12 − 2 = 10 m².
Step 2 — Use these quantities per square metre
| Wall type | Unit size | Approx. per m² | Approx. per 100 sq ft |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4.5" (half-brick) wall | 9" × 4" × 3" fly ash brick | ≈ 49 bricks | ≈ 455 bricks |
| 9" (full-brick) wall | 9" × 4" × 3" fly ash brick | ≈ 98 bricks | ≈ 910 bricks |
| Block wall | 15" × 8" solid block (any thickness) | ≈ 12 blocks | ≈ 112 blocks |
These figures include a standard 10 mm mortar joint. The block figure is the same for 4" and 6" thick blocks because the face size (15" × 8") is the same.
Step 3 — Add wastage
Add about 5% for breakage, cutting at corners and openings. For walls with many openings or cuts, allow 7–10%.
Worked example
A 10 m² 9-inch wall: 10 × 98 = 980 bricks. Add 5% wastage: 980 × 1.05 ≈ 1,030 fly ash bricks.
The same 10 m² as a 6-inch solid block wall: 10 × 12 = 120 blocks. Add 5%: ≈ 126 blocks.
